Dog Wheelchair

Humans are not the only users of wheelchairs.  Did you know that a large number of animals depend on wheelchairs too.  One of the most common kind of animal wheelchairs used today is a dog wheelchair. 

Dogs are often referred to as man’s best friend.  Many households across America own a dog.  These animals often become a member of the family, almost like an additional child.  When children get sick or injured, their parents help them and many pet owners do the same for their dogs.

There are many reasons why a dog could need a dog wheelchair.  One of the most common reasons for a wheelchair is old age. Once dogs reach a certain age, they may begin to lose the ability to walk or stand on their own.  A dog wheelchair will help dogs to be able to stand and move without a large amount of pain and suffering.  Additional dogs may need a dog wheelchair due to health problems, disabilities, or an accident. 

Dogs of all sizes, large are small, can benefit from the use of a dog wheelchair.  There are many different styles and models available.  The final selection should be recommend by a vet and will most likely depend on the size of the dog. 

Dog wheelchairs can come with two, three, or even four wheels.  The number of wheels on a dog wheelchair will generally depend on how much support is needed. Often times, a two wheedled dog wheelchair will either be front or rear wheel drive.  This is where the wheels and main harness section are placed.  If a dog has a hind leg injury, then dog wheelchair will most likely be a rear wheel fixture and visa versa. 

Dog wheelchairs can be purchased from a wide variety of places.  A dog wheelchair may be purchased online, in a pet store, vet office, or possibly even from a traditional wheelchair store.  A dog wheelchair can cost anywhere from one hundred dollars on up. 

Once a dog wheelchair is purchased for your pet, it is important to remember that it may take your them a little while to adjust.  Your dog may appear to be afraid of the wheelchair to begin with. If the dog is still not adjusting after a while, a vet or the wheelchair company should be contacted.  The dog wheelchair may be broken or the incorrect size for your dog. 

A dog wheelchair is an easy way for older or disabled dogs to continue on with their lives.  Depending on the overall condition of the dog and the wheelchair model, most dogs are able to perform activities as well, if not better, than before.
