In the past years, sales of electric wheelchairs have skyrocketed.  Many individuals are choosing to purchase an electric wheelchair because they are easy to operate and extremely convenient.  The decision to purchase an electric wheelchair is a fairly expensive one.  Electric wheelchairs cost more money than traditional manual wheelchairs.  Before going out and purchasing an electric wheelchair there is some information that should be obtained and some important decisions should be made ahead of time. 

Many individuals may encounter a problem when shopping for an electric wheelchair.  There are some shoppers who are unaware of the wide model selections, styles, and available accessories.  When an electric wheelchair shopper begins browsing, they may be overwhelmed by all of the available options.  Deciding on the style or accessories needed beforehand will make a shopping trip easier and potentially less stressful. 

Each wheelchair manufacture may choose to design and build their electric wheelchairs different from others.  The structural design on any wheelchair is extremely important and should be one of the first things considered.  There are electric wheelchairs that are light in durability and may only be recommended for indoor use.  If the wheelchair will be used by someone who plan on going outside, a stronger design should be considered.  There are nothing on these low durability electric wheelchairs that will prevent them from going outside; however, the chair may be more susceptible to damage. 

A typical electric wheelchair will have control buttons or joy sticks that the occupant can control with their hands.  Since there are disabled individuals who are unable to use their arms and hands, different wheelchair manufactures have produced different ways to control electric wheelchairs. 

The reason why many people purchase a wheelchair is because a doctor may have recommended it.  If this is the case, it is important to discuss with doctors which type of wheelchair may best.  Most wheelchair bound individuals will comment on how nice and convenient having and electric wheelchair can be; however, not all individuals are able to have one.  One aspect that should be considered ahead of time is whether or not the individual can handle and successfully operate an electric wheelchair.  Some models are touchy and the quick brush of the joystick may send the chair rolling. 

Financial limitations are slowly becoming less and less of a problem.  Many Medicare and insurance companies are incorporating wheelchairs coverage, including electric wheelchairs, into their plans.  Prices will depend on where or who you purchase an electric wheelchair from.  The majority of new electric wheelchairs start at around two thousand dollars and continue on up.  Customizing and adding additional accessories to an electric wheelchair will only rise the cost up more.  When purchasing an electric wheelchair, price should be taken into consideration; however, it is not recommended to base your purchase solely on it.
