Used Wheelchair

Wheelchairs are needed and used by individuals around the world.  Unfortunately quality new wheelchairs do not always come cheap.  For this reason many individuals are purchasing used wheelchairs.  Is a used wheelchair the best option?  It honestly depends upon the individual the chair is being used for and a few other circumstances.

Some individuals who are not covered by an insurance company or Medicare plan may be finically unable to purchase a new wheelchair. If Medicare or insurance assistance is available, a new one should be considered before purchasing a used wheelchair.

At any given point in time, there are a large number of used wheelchairs available for sale.  The quality and durability of used wheelchairs will generally depend on how well the previous owner cared for the chair.  Manual, folding, electric, and pediatric wheelchairs are all usually sold as used.  A quality used wheelchair can serve the same purpose as a newer, more expensive model would.

Just like a new vehicle, if you are unfamiliar with wheelchairs, a flaw or damage may go unnoticed.  This is why it is generally better to purchase a used wheelchair from a known company.  Companies that offer new wheelchairs will generally have a selection of used ones too.  Some of these wheelchair companies may take trade ins or will outright purchase used wheelchairs.  Although it is not guaranteed, these companies are more likely to only purchase and sell quality and dependable chairs.

Even though it may be safer and more realistic to purchase from a wheelchair store or dealer, used wheelchairs can be purchased from other individuals.  If a wheelchair will be purchased from a classified advertisement, it may be a wise idea to review the model ahead of time.  This knowledgeable information can be used to determine if the used wheelchair has been damaged or altered in any way.  Asking a lot of questions is important.  This should be done regardless of where a used wheelchair is being purchased from.  A few questions that should be asked may include the age of the chair, if any alterations were preformed, their personal view on the state of the wheelchair now, and it is important to learn why the wheelchair is being sold.

Some of the most common types of used wheelchairs available are pediatric wheelchairs.  Just like other used wheelchairs, these should also be fully examined.  Most times they are still in prefect or decent safe.  Many pediatric wheelchairs are sold once a larger or adult size model is needed.  Purchasing a pediatric wheelchair may allow children to obtained a previously customized kids wheelchair at way below the normal retail cost.

In short, purchasing a used wheelchair can be beneficial in many ways.  It is extremely important that all used wheelchairs are properly tests and fully examined by the individual who will be using it.  Testing a used wheelchair ahead of time will only help to prevent stress or unhappiness later on in the future.
