Wheelchair Exercise

A common misconception concerning wheelchair bound individuals is that they are limited in their ability to stay active.  The reality is that many wheelchair users are extremely well cared for and physically fit. Many individuals stay fit by actively partaking in wheelchair exercise.

Wheelchair exercise is just like normal exercising.  The only thing different is that many of the routines may be changed or specifically designed for wheelchair users.  Both forms of exercise will increase ones health and fitness abilities.

Twenty minutes is often referred to as the magic number in exercising and is the same for wheelchair exercise.  Exercising or working out for twenty minutes gets your body going and is likely to produce better results.  The amount of exercise completed should depended on your ability to continue on.  Wheelchair bound individuals who are just beginning to participate in wheelchair exercise routines should take it slow and maybe only start out at twenty minutes.  Once your body adjusts to the wheelchair exercise routine, you may increase your workout time to whatever you wish.  Although many wheelchair bound athletes exercise daily, a break or day off is recommend.  This break will give your body and muscles time to heal.

When exercising it is important to remember to be well aware of your surroundings, this may help to keep you safe.  Additional wheelchair exercise tips may include making sure your exercise area is free and clean of potentially dangerous debris.  If your current wheelchair exercise maneuver does not require your or your chair to be moving, it might be a good idea to place the brake on.  Manual or electric wheelchairs can both run the risk of moving or tipping over, depending on the workout.  As with any individual, wheelchair users are encouraged to speak with their doctor before beginning a wheelchair exercise plan.

There are wide variety of wheelchair exercise options and routines.  One of the best ways to learn about wheelchair exercising is by researching the topic online.  There may be online websites or message groups that offer support or exercise tips for wheelchair bound individuals.  Local gyms may also have a wheelchair exercise program.  In addition to the above mentioned resources, purchasing an instructional wheelchair exercise video may work.  These videos are just like traditional videos.  They give you complete instructions and tips on how to complete the workout routines.

Wheelchair exercise can be done with a  partner or alone. Popular wheelchair exercises may include swimming, weightlifting, and more.  If you are wheelchair bound and interested in becoming more healthy or physically fit, start a wheelchair exercise program today.
