Wheelchair Ramps

Just about every household that houses a wheelchair bound individual will have at least one wheelchair ramp on the premise.  Wheelchair ramps makes moving an individual from different locations easier than potentially having to carry them.

Wheelchair ramps that may be attached to a home or residence is sometimes referred to as a modular style ramp.  These wheelchair ramps can be made out of aluminum, metal, and other additional materials.  These modular ramp styles are also used in many business establishments allowing handicapped individuals to use their services.  Modular means they are able to move and depending on the size of these ramps, they may be easy to move if needed.  Modular wheelchair ramps may also be selected with handles if needed.

Another type of a wheelchair ramp that a home or business may use are homemade or professionally handmade wheelchair ramps.  Unless you have experience producing quality wheelchair ramps that are safe, hiring a professional may be the best option.  Permanent wheelchair ramps may be made from just about any material; however, wood is one of the most common materials used.

In addition to longer or more elaborate wheelchair ramps, there are convenient portable wheelchair ramps available.  Although some individuals may use these portable wheelchair ramps on their home, they are most often used on vehicles or when traveling.  Portable wheelchair ramps are strong, yet often fairly lightweight and able to fold up.  Many portable wheelchair ramps can fit into the trunk of a standard vehicle.

The price of a wheelchair ramp will depend upon the length of the ramp and the materials used to make it.  Wheelchair ramps can begin to start selling at around two hundred dollars and up.  If you are insured or on Medicare and in need of a wheelchair ramp, speak to your representative.  If your insurance or Medicare covers the cost of a wheelchair or scooter, they may be able to help with a wheelchair ramp.  If you are shopping for a wheelchair ramp and may also be in need of a wheelchair, try working out a deal or discount with a sales representative.  Although not all locations selling wheelchair ramps will do this, there are many companies that offer incentives or small discounts when purchasing multiple products from them.

Before permanently attaching wheelchair ramps to your home, it is important that you check out local laws and guidelines.  If an ramp is being built, a building permit may be required.  Many county officials offer guidelines and will check wheelchair ramps for safety issues.  When in doubt, speak to an area doctor or county representative before spending any unnecessary money.
